UN General Assembly President Speaks Out about Women’s Rights

The UN General Assembly President, Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, was recently honored at Rutgers University for her dedication to women and human rights. In her address, Sheikha Haya spoke out about women’s rights in the Middle East. (More information)

Serbia: Alternative Report to the CEDAW Committee

The alternative report to CEDAW on Serbia was issued on 30 March 2007 on behalf of women’s NGOs, including Voice of Difference, Autonomous Women’s Center, ASTRA, Incest Trauma Center, and Women in Black. (More information)

Nordic Countries: Demand for Measures against Trafficking

Concrete measures must be taken to combat trafficking and prostitution in the Baltic States and Russia. One way is to share experiences with the Nordic countries. (More information)

South Caucasus Domestic Violence Conference: Swedish NGO Involvement

The Swedish Fund “Kvinna till Kvinna” was established in 1993 on the basis of the belief that “Women’s participation is essential in order to provide for comprehensive post-conflict rehabilitation.” In the beginning the organization focused on the Balkans, however, now it has spread to other regions, including the South Caucasus. Non-governmental Organizations Address Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights this afternoon heard statements from representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with respect to the report of Nepal, which it will examine during the current session, as well as on the impact of trade agreements on economic, social and cultural rights. It also discussed issues relating to national human rights institutions and the right to education. (More information)

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Visits Kazakhstan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, today concluded a visit to Astana, Kazakhstan from 29 to 30 April, as a part of her visit to Central Asia. (More information)

European Employers and Trade Unions Commit to Tackle Violence and Harassment at Work

The European social partners have signed a framework agreement on harassment and violence at work. The agreement aims to prevent and, where necessary, manage problems of bullying, sexual harassment and physical violence at the workplace. Companies in Europe will have to adopt a policy of zero-tolerance towards such behaviour and draw up procedures to deal with cases of harassment and violence where they occur. (More information)
